The artist I talked to this week was Yujia Gu also known as Beatrice. Gu is originally from China and her family still lives there while she attends CSULB. She is a senior and she will be graduating this spring. Gu does not have any siblings so she is the only child in her family. She enjoys Graphic Design and tries to relate it to the society as much as she can.
Gu showed two of her art pieces in her exhibition. The first photo is a picture of her work that is called “Popular Names” which demonstrates the most popular names in America. She explains that as the names are projected, they begin to go up and down because as the year goes by the ranks change. The art piece is used by a projector so technology is used to show the information. The next picture is a photo of her second piece which is called “Special Olympics Game Pictogram– San Francisco” and that piece represents the dynamic and movement of each sport that is presented in the Olympics. She uses various patterns and shapes to show the body movement.
Gu explained that in China different names have different meanings during different time zones and she wanted to see if it was the same in America. She gathered the top ten names used in the last 100 years. In order for her to accomplish this, she found statics on a social security website. She explains that over time the ranking of the names change meaning that some names are used more than others. She also explained his she used a background relations the earth to demonstrate that we were born on the earth. For the “Special Olympics Game Pictogram– San Francisco,” Gu wanted people to know what the Special Olympics were so that is why she displayed the different sports that are featured in the Special Olympics.
I love the fact that Gu relates her art pieces to the society events. I can learn so much just by looking at her pieces. In the most popular names, I was able to see what names were most popular in America. Now when I meet someone with one of those names listed, I would be able to look back to her art piece. The Special Olympics could also teach people what it is which is really cool because I know there are a lot of people that have no idea what it is. Her art does not only focus on the visual aspect but the meaning behind it which I think is awesome!
